{notes on the canon point}

By default, I play Aubrey from some ambiguous point after the true end; still reserved, and old habits (read: anger issues) die hard, but self-reflection has left her more cognizant of said issues & just a bit more willing to open up. There’s also an unspoken handwave that she feels the need to make some friends entirely removed from All That Baggage, hence hanging out wherever random memes are set.
Her canon point for Labyrinthum is earlier, for that sweet, sweet character development.

I am extremely down to write her from other canon points, whether before, during, or after the game (neutral end, my angst-ridden beloved), with castmates or crosscanon. Characterization footnotes below; includes endgame outlines and vague allusions to major plot points, so major spoilers ahead!

a lineup of Aubrey at different stages of her youth, up to the present day art by omocat

Aubrey has always acted true to her feelings. Even though she has trouble admitting how much she cares, her actions have shown otherwise.

She has been a little hard to understand… but you can trust that she will always try her best to do the right thing.

in-game flavor text (and the core of how I try to write Aubrey, no matter what timeframe)

pre-game

  • childhood [age ≤12, before Mari’s death]: Cheery, encouraging, much more outwardly emotional in any direction. Effectively similar to Headspace counterpart, give or take crush on Sunny (which I leave ambiguous by default, but can swing either way if preferred).
    • Not a phase I’m super interested in playing, on its own. Maybe as part of a larger storyline?
  • circa Mari death [~4 years from present]: Morose, grieving, substantially more volatile. Marked by the blonde phase, earning that troublemaking delinquent reputation; has a lot to figure out and making it everyone’s problem. Abrasive.
    • Largely headcanon, as canon is sparse on the timeline details. The game doesn’t even allude to the blonde phase like girl wtf were you doing—
  • and more recently… [up to & including early game]: With friends, is perfectly capable of being a relaxed, amicable person again; otherwise, mostly just wants to be left alone. Can still be dramatic, but (much as she can help it) it’s more showy than anything. Categorically does not want to acknowledge the past.

The Aubrey at the start of the game is not a particularly mature person, and plays her cards close. Although she is and always has been deeply sentimental, it’s not a side she’s keen on showing anyone, not even friends. It’s fine. She can manage. None of your business.

In [community profile] labyrinthum, she’s been picked up from canon right around here! Later revelations have not set in yet.

mid-game

  • The attitude noted above still more or less applies up to the lake scene on Two Days Left. Aubrey shuts down for a while after that, but old defenses are still in play right up until Hero points out the polaroids on her wall.
  • On One Day Left, after joining the party, Aubrey is noticeably more mature & self-aware. This is my main frame of reference for her post-game characterization, regardless of route: not exactly an open book, but more willing to acknowledge her mistakes & think about things beyond a knee-jerk reaction.

There are technically a bunch of little branch-offs here (whether Sunny touches grass on Three Days Left; whether he does again on Two Days Left; if he doesn’t on either day, then whether he moves or, uh, doesn’t; and, on the true route, whether Omori “defeats” him or not). The two routes I’ve thought about most are as follows, but I’m down to play around with other variations!

true end [Sunny tells his friends the truth]
The default, unless otherwise noted.

  • Generally similar to One Day Left; can still be a menace, but overall way more chill & willing to be open.
  • The guard is not completely down, especially with strangers, but it turns out Trusting People Is Okay Actually so it’s more “will approach with caution” than “will straight-up ignore people unless specifically called.”
  • I leave the friends’ reactions to the truth, and its impact (or lack thereof) on their relations, ambiguous by default. For Aubrey specifically, I figure it’s at least given her a lot to think about in terms of morality and what is/isn’t forgivable, especially since she can relate to Sunny’s mistake. Very down to hash out specifics or just wing it!

“neutral” end [“I’m so sorry, Basil. Please forgive me…”]
Because this will almost inevitably dive into heavy subject matter, I only play from this route on request. A lot more speculative.

  • Doing extremely bad, thank you, especially in the immediate aftermath. Detached, for some time, but it’s gotta blow at some point…
  • Unlike the true end, feels like opening up completely backfired, or is useless at best. Backpedaling hard on the feeling-emotions-is-okay idea.
  • Angrier. More volatile, more withdrawn—or shut down entirely. Liable to feel like every bridge that hasn’t been burned yet should be.

Basically, this is The Angst Route™. Talk of suicide is, if she opens up, inevitable.

miscellany?

This post used to include headcanons and other factoids. Still haven’t figured out where to put those; until I do, here’s a rough draft in the archive.

visual: in-game + official art

written description

Teenage girl with long pink hair and a blue-green headband-bow. Pale skin; thin; eyes appear to match the bow. Sharp eyeliner.

Default outfit consists of the following: open white bomber-esque jacket with a sailor-inspired collar; black top with midriff; denim miniskirt; and colorful sneakers—bright, overall. Optionally wields a nail bat.

  • Regular human teenager (~16) from a late-90s/early-2000s American suburbia. Neither the pink hair nor the bright eyes are natural, though this may not be apparent from a distance.
  • Always wearing the headband-bow unless otherwise stated; nail bat, meanwhile, is optional. Feel free to ask if unspecified, or just assume and I’ll probably roll with it!

Canon height not given. If it comes up, I usually headcanon around 5'4"ish (~162cm).

demeanor: Calm if distant by default, but not unexpressive. Keeps her hands to herself, but will go for a casual fistbump or the like with friends. Occasionally known to be melodramatic, which is more intentional in some circumstances than others, and can get very animated when agitated.

IC Permissions

physical affection: ✔—Aubrey is usually not comfortable with this and will make that known, though reaction may vary depending on who’s doing what. (Regardless, mun has no problem whatsoever.)
romance/shipping: ✔?; anything serious will probably be a slowburn, but Aubrey flusters easily so good luck have fun…! (By default she’s also clueless about anything that isn’t M/F, but I have no preference & can handwave the ignorance if you’re not into it OOCly.)
violence/injury: ✔, to an extent; despite the nail bat, Aubrey has never been in a serious, bloody fight and has no intention of getting into one. Fisticuffs is fine, but if things get too risky she’s likely to retreat.
mind-reading: ✔, will have no idea. Feel free to give me a poke and I can write more for you to chew on!

potential warnings: Aubrey can be pretty blunt, but likely won’t bring up heavier topics unprovoked. Has a few abandonment and parental issues that she’d prefer not to get into, but subtext can slip through.
It should also be noted that her canon deals with heavy topics including (but not limited to) mental health, suicide, and the ramifications thereof years after a tragedy. Additional notes on the HMD/opt-out post.

OOC Info

backtagging: ✔, always
threadhopping: ✔?, probably fine but ask first
fourthwalling: ✔?, although Aubrey will probably dismiss it
crosscanon/crossmedium: ✔✔✔ I love it
not interested in: ¯\_(ツ)_/¯; let’s talk before substantial assumed CR (e.g. childhood BFFs, jumping into a ship), but otherwise consider everything fair game, warnings not required

content note

on the canon: Omori is a psychological horror game steeped in themes including but not limited to depression, anxiety, grief, and suicide. [Mild spoiler:] Specifically, the death of a young person deeply affected every major character, and the game’s storyline deals with the ramifications years later. [/end spoiler]
These subjects are unlikely to come up in casual threads, but may be mentioned in serious interactions. If you want details, or to preemptively avoid any topics altogether, let me know.

on the character: Has a negligent mother & absent father. Also fueled the bullying of a childhood friend, but isn’t going to kick some random kid for fun; at a post-game canonpoint (the default for memes/PSLs), she regrets the whole ordeal.
Aubrey would prefer that people not know any of these things, but they can come up in certain contexts. As with the canon content, it can be worked around; just drop a note.

cool and nifty link to view current page in site theme

Because this journal has a bunch of Custom CSS to make certain posts look nice and uniform, but that also breaks a bunch of codes that were made for site theme. So here’s a link to view the page you’re on in your default site theme.
