Character Questions:
1. Who is the person your character is most bonded with from their canon? Or who is someone they miss the most?
Unequivocally, Mari. Four years before the game takes place, Mari passed away; she was a cornerstone of Aubrey’s childhood friend group, and without her, they all fell apart. Aubrey’s change from a sweet, openly-caring girl to an angry, reserved teenager was spurred in large part by (what she perceived to be) a friend defacing Mari’s memory. Aubrey and Mari were going to dye their hair together, and despite some dismissive comments, Aubrey has continued to visit Mari’s grave through the years. Official art also suggests Aubrey’s cyan bow used to be Mari’s.
It should be noted that, although she’ll deny it at this canon point, Aubrey misses all of her childhood friends dearly. She was especially close to Sunny, who she relied on to listen to her when the others were busy, and Basil, who she introduced to the rest.
2. What are they most afraid of?
Being alone—seemingly ironic, when she’s both actively antagonistic towards old friends who approach in any context and hasn’t opened up to the new ones, but it’s a defense mechanism. It’s implied she expects people to leave her even when they’re friends; with Mari’s death and the group’s subsequent dissolution, that fear was realized. By her own (later canon point) admission, Aubrey felt abandoned. She’s markedly less vulnerable with new friends, in an apparent bid to avoid future hurt by keeping herself at an emotional distance.
3. What is their weakness? Emotionally, mentally and physically?
Emotionally/mentally, Aubrey is sensitive; sometimes a boon, often her most glaring flaw. She’s self-centered, with a strong tendency to make other people’s problems about herself and/or assume that others have set out to hurt her—all without considering her own hand in the situation, or what might be motivating them. In the game’s better ending she at least becomes self-aware of this; at this canon point, however, the righteous fury burns bright.
Physically, Aubrey is a random civilian who, despite all her tough-talking provocations, doesn’t seem to have any serious fighting technique or experience. For whatever it’s worth, the game mechanically maxes her strengths in health and attack, at the neglect of defense, speed, and other stats.
4. What would make them happiest?
At this canon point, Aubrey would say that her past leaving her alone for good would be fantastic. Maybe finding peace along the way, whatever that is. But what actually brings her joy, and hope for the future, is the idea of friends both new and old uniting and having a good time together. Aubrey is a deeply sentimental person, much as she denies it these days. Surrounded by loved ones, she thrives.
5. What’s their type for a lover?
Canon gestures vaguely towards Aubrey enjoying the romantic but leaves the details untouched. She can get along with a variety of personalities, from the boisterous go-getter to the quiet wallflower, but a common thread is that all her friends are caring, genuine people. They might lie to themselves and by extension the people around them, but beneath any posturing and all their flaws, they mean well—or at least try to.
